Reciprocal learning in teacher education and school education between Canada and China
[A Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)of Canada Partnership Project]
Project Directors: Dr. Shijing Xu & Dr. Michael Connelly.
This Partnership proposal is focused on cross-cultural Canada/China educational content. The project is relevant to the expected outcomes of two SSHRC priority areas:Digital Economy and Innovation, Leadership and Prosperity. We do not claim either priority as our central context though our purpose and outcomes are related to both.
“Reciprocal Learning in Teacher Education and School Education and School Education between Canada and China” is a partnership project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC, 2013-2020) and by in-kind partner contributions. This Partnership involves two Canadian and four Chinese university, two Canadian school boards with elementary and secondary schools in Toronto, Windsor, Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Changchun, and a seven member International Advisory Committee, and Six research teams co-led by Chinese and Canadian team leaders. The Partnership consists of two Project Directors and 40 Co-Applicants and Collaborators external to the Partner organizations from the International Advisory Committee. Six research teams with Chinese and Canadian co-leaders define the research agenda with the ICT research team having the extra responsibility of developing an electronic Knowledge Mobilization platform.
The primary goal of the project is to build a knowledge base for understanding and comparing the Canadian and Chinese educational systems, for generating positive, reciprocal, practitioner knowledge and methods, and for contributing to public discussion of primary and secondary education in China, Canada and more broadly. The secondary goal is to build a sustainable framework for practitioner communication beyond the life of the project, which fits the SSHRC Connection Program objective of creating benefits “beyond the campus … that facilitate the multidirectional flow of research knowledge.”
